Being Present As A Path Toward Wholeness

Being present is critical to wholeness, living at your full potential with mindful awareness of yourself and the world around you, and living freely with divine purpose. In order to work towards being fully present, I will be exploring issues that get in the way of presence in future blogs.

In order to be present, which means engaging in the here and now physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually, you must face any issues keeping you locked in emotional and mental patterns relating to the past and future. Being present allows us to bring our complete attention to ourselves intimately and interact with the world without any preconceived notions. This in turn is a path to freedom in the form of self actualization and wholeness.

Ways of Learning to be Present:

In order to quiet your thoughts and emotions, participate in a practice that engages your complete attention - whatever appeals to you on that level. For me, that is painting. Use awareness and engagement of your five senses to fully embrace this activity in an embodied way.

Create routines for your everyday life so that your mind has more opportunities to frame its thought processes around what you are currently doing and will be doing. Set aside time to address your anxieties so that the rest of the time, you can acknowledge them and let them go until the predetermined time to give them your focus.

Journaling is another way of expanding your awareness of yourself and the world around you, releasing thoughts and emotions centered on the past and noting the good and difficult in your present situation. Be sure to note the positives in your life and not get spun up about issues that take you out of now.

To get the most from your present situation, focus yourself on the reality of your moment to moment journey not the end goal. This type of practice will also bring you mindfully into the present where you actually live.

Meditation is a great tool for expanding your awareness of your present life. It brings your mind and body into connection and your focus mindfully aware of the here and now.

Focus on blessings and gratitude as a way of shifting your focus to the present beauty in your life.

Embrace yourself where you are now as you cognizantly travel your path towards presence.
